Whether you’re working on a simple timer or an advanced sensor, there are many different types of electronic circuit boards to choose from. Single-sided PCBs are the simplest type of printed circuit board. These PCBs have a non-conductive substrate material, such as FR-4, with a layer of conductive copper on one side. The copper on the surface of the board is connected to other components and wires through small holes in the board called vias.
Double-sided PCBs are more complex than single-sided boards, as they have two conductive layers. The conductive layers are separated by prepreg (pre-impregnated) insulating layers that are bonded and laminated using heat and pressure. The inner layers of the multi-layer boards can be used for power and ground planes, while the outer layers can be etched and patterned to allow for signal routing and component placement. Holes are drilled through the insulating layers and plated with copper to create vias.
